A pre-populated medication list for patient onboarding
B2C/ Mobile / Visual

Overview

Zus Health’s mission is to have a unified medical record that removes the usual blockers between care providers so that the best patient outcomes are achieved by delivering the right care at the fastest possible times.

Currently, when patients are admitted to a new care provider, they need to spend time filling out a pre-populated medication form before seeing the physicians and getting treatment. A lot of time is wasted. That’s why we conducted as user research to validate the idea of the onboarding in-take form.
GOALS
  • Eliminates the time and effort of patient onboarding
  • Patients could get faster treatment by having a complete and updated record of their medications, surgical history, and hospitalization

Brainstorming and Design Phase

I collaborated with 3 product managers to understand the current pain points of patient onboarding when using a new care provider. In order to have a full picture of the current process and what can be improved, we had meetings and decided to design the pre-populated medication list.

After determining the user flow, I then designed the high-fidelity mock-up with interactions so that it was used to test with the interviewees.

User Research

The purpose of the user research was to learn the followings.

1) How should pre-populated questions be framed in order to elicit expected behavior from patients?
2) Do patients like that pre-population saves them time?
3) Will patients be willing spend more time in order to provide more accurate information and complete history to their doctors?
4) How might patients respond to inaccurate data?
5) What data, if any, should absolutely be pre-populated? What data, if any, should definitely NOT be pre-populated? Why?
User Demographics
We recruited 9 people for the research. Each session lasted for 45 minutes to an hour. They were asked about the normal process of admitting to a new care provider. Then, they were asked to clicked on the above clickable prototype to give us feedbacks.

The Key Takeaways

  • A high degree of comfort in sharing medical history between healthcare professionals, assuming it is “secure” and relevant to their care
  • Most users would choose a faster, less burdensome process even if it is less specific/accurate than a more time-consuming process with additional levels of detail
  • No user expressed concern that a healthcare provider was able to access their medications history specifically and would want as much pre-population as possible
  • The threshold for inaccurate data (“I’ve never taken this before”) before skeptical:- Roughly < 35% being incorrect or > 65% need to be accurate (I have taken or are currently taking).
  • Users with chronic conditions are willing to take the time to provide accurate information and use pre-population as a starting point as long as it can be edited. Most expressed more the doctor knows about them the better.
  • When asked... If your provider has access to other medical information (labs values, physician notes) do you see that as a positive or negative? One surprising answer: Mostly fine, but if I’m trying to get a second opinion, I may not want them to see what the other physician said to prevent bias.
  • Didn’t want to overwhelm the doctor with too much information when you’re just there for a very specific reason. For instance, cleaning ears.

Notable Quotes

Design Considerations

Edit
The majority of users wanted the ability to edit a pre-populated medication (eg. Correct medication but incorrect dosage)
Adding a medication
- Users want to add details around frequency in addition to dosage. The written instructions were unclear to all users on how to finalize adding a medication.

- Provide copy asking users to add other medications they are taking such as vitamins, supplements, herbal, etc. Users indicated they would take the time to provide
Inaccurate data
- Users prefer to have a drop-down reason for unchecking a medication but still have a notes field to fall back on (never taken, paused taking, no longer taking).

- Ability to add notes to active meds AND when unchecking a medication. Currently, notes only appear when unchecking.

Result

A pre-populated medication list is being built by the engineers. Hopefully, with this feature, Zus Health can gain more customers and raise the series B funding.
